Migraines are known for their prevalent and disruptive nature, and conventional solutions such as prescription medication may not work for everyone. While medication can provide relief, it often comes with side effects that may manifest for some people. Another method in relieving migraines are natural remedies and supplements that offer a complementary approach alongside the conventional treatments or as standalone alternatives for those looking for a more holistic approach to migraine management.

Opting for natural remedies could lead to a minimized reliance on medications, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of migraine pains. Moreover, many natural remedies could contribute to a migraine sufferer's overall health and well-being.

Natural Remedies for Migraine Relief

As debilitating migraines could be, it is important to find natural remedies that can help manage and prevent these attacks at the comfort of your own home and within your budget.

Research suggests that lavender oil has numerous benefits for migraine relief. Inhaling its calming aroma can ease stress and anxiety, and applying it to the temples can help reduce pain and promote relaxation. According to healthline, adults can add 2 to 4 drops of oil to 2 to 3 cups of boiling water to inhale the vapors.

Or, migraine sufferers could use the RENPHO EyeSnooze Aroma, which when used with lavender oil, creates an immersive experience. The warmth of the eye mask enhances the absorption of the lavender oil’s essence, while its aroma acts as a tranquil agent, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

Practicing yoga and other stress management techniques can significantly reduce the frequency of migraines, as they improve blood circulation and reduce muscle tension. Incorporating deep breathing exercises and meditation into your routine can also help manage stress and prevent migraines.

Herbal Supplements for Migraines

Although professionals in the medical field steer clear of herbal supplements due to limited evidence of its effectivity, these have long been used as alternative treatments for migraines and headaches. Among the various natural remedies available, some notable options include feverfew, butterbur, ginger, magnesium, and peppermint.

Known as the "medieval aspirin", feverfew is a plant from the daisy family that has been traditionally used for centuries to treat fevers and other inflammatory conditions. Studies have shown that feverfew may contribute to the reduction of the frequency and severity of migraines.

Butterbur, derived from a plant native to Europe and Asia, was used a remedy for the plague in the Middle Ages, as well as coughs, asthma, and wounds in the 17th century. Nowadays, derivatives from the butterbur have been used to relieve urinary tract symptoms, stomach aches, hay fever, and, migraine attacks. It is important, however, to note that not all butterbur supplements are safe, as some contain harmful compounds known as pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage.

Moreover, ginger has shown progress in relieving migraine-related pain, nausea, and vomiting, as it contains chemical compounds — including gingerols and shogaols — that have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. Although some studies do not directly show positive clinical evidence, ginger has far fewer side effects than sumatriptan (a medication for migraines and cluster headaches).

In addition to these herbal options, essential oils could help treat headaches or migraines without the side effects of prescription medications. Oils such as peppermint, chamomile, and rosemary are known for their calming properties, with a 2021 study stating that essential oils might reduce neurogenic inflammation and pain sensitivity and relax vascular tension.

While herbal supplements can be a natural and potentially effective approach for managing migraines, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating them into your regimen, especially if you take any other medications or have underlying medical conditions.
