RENPHO Study Shows Poor Sleep Could Cut Your Life Short
Stay tuned to our latest news
Did you know that getting enough sleep is vital for your health and longevity? According to our recent study, more than half of UK adults (59%) are sleeping only five hours or less per night on a regular basis, which could reduce life expectancy by 12.3 years. That means they could be living below 70 years old, while the average life expectancy in the UK is currently 82 years old.
The study, which surveyed 2,400 UK adults aged 18 and over, revealed that the main reasons for poor sleep quality are work stress (83%), financial worry (81%), uncomfortable sleeping environment (67%), phone use (59%), and sleep disorder (38%). As a result, sleep-deprived Brits are missing out on approximately 61,360,000 hours of sleep per night collectively.
Why is Sleep So Important?
Research shows that sleeping less than seven hours per night, which is the recommended amount by experts, can have serious consequences for your health. Some of the risks of chronic sleep deprivation include increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, depression, dementia, and impaired immunity. Moreover, a meta-analysis of three large studies found that sleeping five or fewer hours per night may decrease life expectancy by up to 15% – equivalent to 12.3 years for the average UK adult.
The study also asked the respondents about the methods they have tried to improve their sleep quality. The most popular ones were supplements and creams (83%), sleep playlists/white noise (77%), physical exercise before bed (61%), TikTok advice (60%), and smart technology (eye massagers) (31%).
Among these methods, physical activity before bed was reported to be ‘successful’ by 75% of the respondents who tried it, followed by smart technology with 72%. Interestingly, TikTok was also a popular source of sleep tips for 60% of the respondents, with hashtags such as #sleeptips and #howtosleep having millions of views globally.
One of the methods that many people use to improve their sleep quality is smart technology, such as eye massagers. Eye massagers are devices that apply gentle pressure, heat, and vibration to the eye area, stimulating blood circulation, relaxing the muscles, and reducing eye fatigue and stress. They can also block out light and noise, creating a comfortable and soothing environment for sleep.
One of the best eye massagers on the market is the RENPHO EyeSnooze Aroma. This innovative product combines an eye massager and a sleep mask in one, offering multiple benefits for your sleep health. The sleep mask has four massage modes, three temperature settings, and a built-in speaker that can play relaxing music or white noise. It also has a smart timer that can automatically turn off the device after 15, 30, or 60 minutes. It is made of soft and breathable fabric that is comfortable to wear and easy to clean. It also has an adjustable strap that can fit different head sizes.
Jonathon Baggia, Marketing Manager at RENPHO, said that “sleep is essential for our wellbeing and overall health, but unfortunately it is often neglected or compromised. The fact that over half of the UK population could be losing more than a decade of their lives due to poor sleep is alarming and a clear sign that something needs to change.” There are many ways to cope with stress and improve sleep quality, such as fitness, technology or supplementation. However, he strongly advises anyone who is regularly getting less than five hours of sleep per night to seek professional help to address an issue that could be fatal in the long run.
