We already know that stress is a common and inevitable part of life, which can affect our physical, mental, and emotional health — causing symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and irritability. While we can’t always control our stressors, we can control how we cope with it. One of the most effective and enjoyable ways to cope with stress is to exercise.
Exercise is well-known for its many health benefits, such as improving cardiovascular fitness, strengthening muscles, preventing chronic diseases, and enhancing mood. However, not all types of exercise are equally beneficial for stress relief. Some types of exercise, such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), can actually increase stress levels by raising cortisol, the stress hormone, and causing inflammation, which can impair the immune system and the brain. While HIIT can be great for improving performance and burning calories, it may not be the best choice for stress relief.
That is why gentle workouts, such as yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and qi gong, are gaining popularity and recognition as effective and enjoyable ways to manage stress and stay fit.
Feather-Like Fitness
Gentle workouts tend to have low impact, meaning they don’t put too much pressure on the joints and muscles, and they involve regulating breathing, which can promote relaxation and calmness. They also combine physical movement with mental focus, which can help us detach from our worries and negative thoughts, and connect with our body and the present moment.
I have personally experienced the benefits of gentle workouts for stress relief and fitness. I felt more energized, refreshed, and happy after each session, and I noticed improvements in my confidence, resilience, and optimism in dealing with stress and other aspects of my life.

Excessive intensive workouts will wear your body out in the long run, and it is time to start incorporating gentle workouts into your weekly routine. You may alternate them with your moderate-intensity workouts, such as brisk walking, swimming, or dancing. This balance would allow you to reap the benefits of both types of exercise, without overloading your body or mind with too much stress.
I also find that gentle workouts are more accessible and adaptable, as they can be done anywhere, anytime, and with minimal equipment. I can do them at home, at work, or even outdoors, depending on my mood and availability. I can also modify them according to my level, preference, and goal, making them more or less challenging, relaxing, or fun.
