The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and relaxation. But it can also be a time of temptation, indulgence, and inactivity. I know how easy it is to eat more, drink more, and exercise less during the holidays, which can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and health problems.
However, it doesn’t have to be this way. I have learned that I can still enjoy the festive spirit and stay fit and healthy at the same time. Here are some creative ways that I stay active and engage in physical activities during the holidays.
Make It a Family Affair
The holidays are a great opportunity to spend quality time with my loved ones. I like to make it fun and active as well. I organize family games, such as charades, scavenger hunts, or trivia, that require physical movement and mental stimulation. I also go for walks, bike rides, or hikes with my family, or play sports, such as soccer, basketball, or badminton, in the backyard or at a nearby park. I sometimes create my own family Olympics, with different events and challenges, such as relay races, obstacle courses, or tug-of-war. The key is to make it enjoyable and inclusive for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.

The holidays are a perfect time to explore new hobbies and interests that can keep me fit and happy. I try a new sport, such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or curling, if I live in a cold climate, or surfing, kayaking, or snorkeling, if I live in a warm climate. I also try a new fitness class, such as yoga, pilates, Zumba, or kickboxing, or a new dance style, such as salsa, hip hop, or ballet. I also learn a new skill, such as martial arts, archery, or rock climbing. The possibilities are endless. I just find something that suits my personality, budget, and availability, and give it a go. I often discover a new passion or talent that I can pursue beyond the holidays.

Be Creative With Your Surroundings
I don’t need a gym or expensive equipment to stay fit and active during the holidays. I use my own body weight and household items to create my own workout routine. For example, I do push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, and burpees using my own body weight. I also use chairs, tables, stairs, or walls to add variety and intensity to my exercises. I also use bottles, cans, books, or bags as weights to increase my strength and endurance. I also use a skipping rope, a hula hoop, or a ball to add some fun and challenge to my workout. I also use music, videos, or apps to guide me and motivate me. The important thing is to be creative and flexible with what I have and what I can do.

The best way to stay fit and active during the holidays is to make it a habit. I don’t wait for the new year to start my fitness journey. I start now and stick to it. I set realistic and specific goals for myself, such as how often, how long, and how hard I want to exercise. I write them down and track my progress. I reward myself for my achievements, but I don’t punish myself for my setbacks. I am consistent and persistent, but also flexible and adaptable. If I miss a workout, I don’t give up. I just resume my routine as soon as possible. If I get bored or tired of my workout, I don’t quit. I just change it up and try something new. I remember, fitness is not a destination, but a journey. I enjoy the process and the results will follow.

The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate and enjoy life. But they are also a great time to take care of myself and my health. By staying active and engaging in physical activities during the holidays, I can not only prevent weight gain and health problems, but also improve my mood, energy, and well-being. So, I don’t let the holidays be an excuse to be lazy and unhealthy. Instead, I use them as an opportunity to be fit and have fun.
